ABOUT ME.

Hi there, it’s nice to see you here!

Read all about me, my education and personal health story down below.

My full name is Nathalie Oberthaler, M.Sc., but I like to just go with Nathalie. I use the Sanskrit word shanti (=inner peace) in my name, because I am a person of calm and peaceful nature, with lots of yin energy and a warm open heart.

I live in Austria and work as a passionate Yoga Teacher and Holistic Health Coach. I share my work online, as well as in person (Click HERE for my services). My mission is to to inspire and motivate others on their personal health and/or yoga journey!

My education.

Right after finishing school at the age of 18 I enrolled at the University of Innsbruck, Austria and graduated as a Bachelor of Science in Biology three years later. I then decided to take a little break from studying, save some money by working several jobs in order to start my first big solo-travel a few months later. I’ve made my first big dream come true when I spend six wonderful months in Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia.
Back in Austria, I enrolled at University once again to continue my studies and specialize in Molecular Biology. After two years, I started working in a research group for my master’s thesis. I graduated as a Master of Science in Molecular Cell- And Developmental Biology in late 2018.

At that time, I was already practicing yoga and have found a new passion of mine. My yoga journey opened up new perspectives for me, which I am truly grateful for, because it changed my life for the better. Since I wanted to deepen my knowledge about the entire yoga philosophy, I decided to spend a few months in India right after I finished my studies. I became a Certified Yoga Teacher and also got in touch with Ayurvedic doctors, practitioners, massage therapists, as well as acupuncturists and TCM physicians. My time in India allowed my to dive deeper into the fields of yoga, holistic health and how to combine modern science with spirituality.
Back in Austria, I started working as a Yoga Teacher and have finally found something that I truly love. On top of that, I decided to become a Certified Holistic Health Coach at IIN in order to be able to pass on all my knowledge and help people on their own health journey. (Click HERE if you are interested in becoming a Holistic Health Caoch as well, I have a great disount for you!)

In my work today, I love to combine my educational background with my life experiences to help and inspire others. Click below for MY SERVICES or read on if you want to know all the details about my personal health story and how I was able to heal myself.
Growing up, I was always very active and part of several sports teams (tennis, swimming, volleyball, ski racing team, etc) until the age of 14, 15 when puberty started and I replaced swimming lessons with party nights and tennis with more time with my friends!
After a while, one could notice that I started gaining a bit of weight due to the lack of exercise and the amount of fast food and sugar I had in my diet. I wouldn’t consider myself super unhealthy at that time, as I still ate veggies from time to time, but I didn’t feel as physically capable and fit as I used to. During that time, I struggled a lot with low self-confidence and had major troubles accepting myself. I tried out many different diets (although I was always at a healthy weight), lost a bit of weight and gained it back. Over the years, I always wrote down my weight and became obsessed with counting calories and restricting myself. This behavior eventually led to binge eating. Some evenings/nights I mindlessly ate my way through the kitchen only to feel bad afterwards.

I was diagnosed with hashimoto thyreoiditis.

When I was in my mid 20s and found yoga, I started to gain more body awareness and became mindful of the things I was eating. I introduced a lot more whole foods into my diet and I felt really great within the first few weeks! Not only did I enjoy my new healthy way of living, I also enjoyed learning more and more about health and nutrition and how we can treat little illnesses with natural home remedies. Eventually, I reached a point where I decided to quit birth control, as I didn’t feel aligned with it anymore. [side note: I started taking the pill at the age of 14. My doctor at that time said that it is a very strange thing to not have a cycle at this age, so I was given hormone-based contraceptives in order to introduce my menstrual cycle. So that way, my body never really figured out how to create the right amount of hormones on it’s own.]
After quitting the pill, I felt like a new person the first few months. I had lots of energy, my skin was glowing, I felt comfortable in my body and loved the way I was eating and feeling! However, around 6 months after quitting birth control, I started to notice some changes. My cycle went from regular to once every two months, then once very three months and then it stopped completely. Furthermore, I experienced abdominal discomfort, indigestion and severe bloating after almost every meal. My skin started to break out, I got rashes on my forehead and around my jawline. In the beginning I ignored all of these signs and thought they would go away. But they didn’t. They only became worse. I started getting problems concentrating, I experienced extreme mood swings and was dealing with depression. I then decided to visit some doctors, but they just wanted to prescribe me anti-depressants, because depression was the leading diagnosis. Since I knew that it was just a symptom, I started to look for a specialist that could help me and hopefully tell me what I needed to do, as i was feeling lost and hopeless. I then got diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Candida albicans, leaky gut and a gluten and egg allergy. I first wanted to manage my candida overgrowth, as it affected my daily life to a point, where I would feel so uncomfortable that I couldn’t leave the house, because I was in such abdominal pain. At that point, I was already struggling with all these issues for over a year and so I decided to go on a Candida diet and that meant to cut out all sugars from my diet from which the fungus feeds on (this also included carbohydrates). After 2 months I lost so much weight, that I wasn’t myself anymore. I was weak, always tired and eventually only weighed 50kg (110 pounds) at 178cm (5’8).

How I healed myself.

It all happened when I was working on my master’s thesis and the extra stress definitely didn’t help my healing journey. When I went to India though, I could release some of that stress and pressure and my digestive issues got a little bit better, but I was still experiencing extreme bloating, constipation, acne, fatigue/low energy, depression, fogginess, forgetfulness, skin rashes and the list goes on..
My time in India has helped me to understand all of my issues a bit better, but when I came back home I was still experiencing all of the above. At that time, almost two years into these struggles, I had tried pretty much everything and I felt hopeless. My digestive system was very weak and I developed many food sensitivities

I almost reached the point of giving up, because I was lacking energy and motivation, but there was still a big part of me that wanted heal. I remembered how wonderful I felt two years ago, when I was at a happy place with myself and the foods I was eating. I knew there’s got to be a way to find my way back to this state of being. Since I was born with an ‘All-Or-Nothing’ attitude, I was determined to take my health into my own hands and really start my healing journey.

With the help of yoga, mindfulness, a healthy & active lifestyle, finding the foods that work for me and Ayurveda I was not only able to bring my digestion and hormones back into balance, but I was also able to clear up my skin and get my energy levels back. The most fascinating thing for me was though, that I was able to heal my hypothyroidism without the use of pharmaceuticals. I get my thyroid checked regularly and until this day I am in no need of medication.
Lao Tzu said “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”  If you want to heal, you need to give yourself enough time & compassion. Every single day you get a new chance to do something good for yourself and your body. Your body always wants the best for you, work with it, rather than against it. During my journey I made a lot of mistakes, but I gained even more knowledge and confidence in what I do. I was not only able to heal myself, but I was also able to help other people find their way back to a healthy and happy lifestyle.
